NYC to New Jersey Relocation

Moving From NYC to New Jersey? Let’s Find Where You Belong.

More space is only part of the picture. I help buyers coming from New York City, Jersey City, and Hoboken understand New Jersey towns, commutes, schools, taxes, and the feel of each community, so you end up in the right place, not just a bigger one.
City to Suburb

From NYC Neighborhoods to New Jersey Communities

If you know New York City but not New Jersey, the search can feel overwhelming fast. Every town has its own commute, its own schools, its own tax bill, and its own personality. Two towns twenty minutes apart can feel like different worlds.

You may be leaving Manhattan or Brooklyn, or you may already live across the river in Jersey City or Hoboken and be ready for more space, better-fit schools, or a different commute. Many of my clients make that move too. Wherever you’re starting, the questions are the same.

I’m Janet Larrain, a Princeton agent with Real Broker. I’ve been in real estate since 2008, and I’ve been investing in New Jersey real estate for 20 years. I know these towns as a local and as an owner, not just from a listing sheet.

Most people moving from the city start with the same questions:

That’s exactly where I come in. We’ll turn those questions into a clear, focused search.

Who I Help Make the Move

People leave the city for different reasons, and I tailor the search to yours.

Young couples ready to settle down

You may be thinking about your first home, more room to grow, and a community where you can put down roots. I’ll help you find a town that fits the life you’re building, whether that’s a walkable downtown, a starter home with a yard, or a place with good schools for down the road.

Young professionals looking for more affordable options

NYC prices can stretch a budget thin. I’ll show you where your money goes further in New Jersey, what the monthly cost really looks like with taxes and fees included, and which towns keep your commute and your social life intact.

Growing families

More space, strong schools, and a community that feels like home.

Buyers who want something different

Downsizing, upsizing, investing, or buying new construction. I’ve worked with all of it.

My Approach

I Help You Compare Towns, Not Just Send You Listings

Anyone can send you a list of homes. What most NYC buyers really need is someone to help them compare the towns themselves.

I look at the whole picture with you: the commute and which train stop makes sense, the schools (public and private), the property taxes, the restaurants and shopping, and what daily life actually feels like.

I also help you weigh towns against each other. Princeton, for example, is a wonderful place to live, and it is priced and taxed to match. Neighboring towns like West Windsor, Plainsboro, South Brunswick, and Montgomery may give you more home, a different tax picture, and a commute that still works. For some buyers Princeton is exactly right. For others, a nearby town is the smarter move.

Six Things That Matter

We’ll Compare What Actually Matters

Instead of sending you hundreds of listings across the state, we’ll narrow the search around six things.

Commute

Getting into NYC by train, bus, ferry, or car, and the best route for where in the city you work.

Home and Property

Condos, townhomes, single-family homes, new construction, yard size, and how much space you really need.

Budget

Home prices, property taxes, HOA fees, and the other costs of owning, so you see the full monthly picture.

Schools

Public and private options, and how each town’s schools fit your family now and later.

Lifestyle

Walkable downtowns, restaurants, shopping, parks, trails, and the overall feel of a community.

Location

How close you are to family, work, airports, major highways, and the places you’ll visit most.

Counties & Towns

Where in New Jersey Should You Live?

New Jersey is a big place with a lot of different ways to live. Most of my NYC clients end up looking in one of two areas: Central Jersey, around Princeton and the Route 1 corridor, or North Jersey, closer to the city. Families and professionals choose both for the same reasons: great schools, a workable commute, good restaurants, easy shopping, and a real sense of community.

Here is how I think about each county. Choose one to see the towns inside it.

Central Jersey

NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor Line is the backbone of the Central Jersey commute, and it’s a line I know inside and out. I can tell you which stop makes sense for where you work and how each town connects to it.

Mercer County

The three main Northeast Corridor stops for the ride to NYC are Princeton Junction, Hamilton, and Trenton, and the Princeton Branch (the “Dinky”) connects downtown Princeton to Princeton Junction. This is where we can compare Princeton’s prices and taxes with the neighboring towns.

Middlesex County

Edison has its own Northeast Corridor station, and many Middlesex commuters also ride from Princeton Junction or New Brunswick. A popular mix of established neighborhoods, newer communities, shopping, and restaurants.

Somerset County

Montgomery commuters drive to the Northeast Corridor and catch the train at Princeton Junction or Jersey Avenue, and in return you get more room, a quieter feel, and strong appeal for families.

North Jersey

Closer to the city, with a mix of train stations, buses, and highways.

Morris County

Commuters here use a mix of nearby train stations, buses, and highways. Expect suburban neighborhoods, parks and trails, and a mix of resale and new construction.

Essex County

Newark is a major transportation hub with the airport close by, and Nutley offers a tree-lined suburban feel close to the city.

Passaic County

Rail and highway connections are close by, and the area offers a wide range of price points and housing types, including multi-family homes.

Bergen and Hudson Counties

These are not my home turf, and I’d rather tell you that than guess. If your search points there, I’ll introduce you to a trusted local agent who knows those markets inside out, and I’ll still help you compare those towns with Central Jersey so you see the full picture.

Not sure which county fits, or don’t see your town? That’s normal. I also work with buyers in nearby areas across Central and North Jersey. Tell me what matters to you, and I’ll help you narrow it down.
